Recently, I sat at a client’s kitchen table with her and her mom after delivering the documents she needed to get married in Brazil. They offered me drinks and snacks, and we talked about her wedding. How many people were coming. How quickly the date was getting closer. How excited she was, and how nervous she felt as everything became more real.
It reminded me that the documents I work with are rarely just pieces of paper.
This birth certificate was part of a wedding. This single-status affidavit was part of two people preparing to begin their life together. The apostilles and translations weren’t the exciting part of getting married in another country, of course, but without the right documents completed in the right way, they could become a very stressful part.

Getting Married in Brazil From Arizona
My client lived here in Arizona, and her fiancé was Brazilian. To prepare for their marriage in Brazil, she needed documents from two different states:

An Arizona single-status affidavit

Why International Marriage Documents Can Feel So Confusing
When someone says, “I’m getting married abroad,” there isn’t one universal list of documents that works for every country or every couple.
The requirements may depend on:
The country where the marriage will take place
The city, province, or local civil registry handling the marriage
Where each document was originally issued
The citizenship and marital history of each person
Whether the document needs an apostille or another form of authentication
Whether a certified, sworn, or official translation is required
How recently the document must have been issued
You may be asked for a birth certificate, divorce decree, death certificate of a former spouse, passport copy, or proof that you’re legally free to marry. That last document may be called a single-status affidavit, certificate of no impediment, affidavit of eligibility to marry, or something similar.
The names can vary, and so can the process.
That’s why the first step is always to get the requirements directly from the civil registry, consulate, attorney, wedding coordinator, or other authority handling the marriage in the destination country. What Does an Apostille Have to Do With Getting Married Abroad?
An apostille is a certificate that authenticates the signature and official capacity connected to a public or notarized document. It allows the document to be recognized in another country that participates in the Hague Apostille Convention.
An apostille doesn’t translate your document, and it doesn’t confirm that the contents are true. It authenticates the public official’s or notary’s signature so the document can be presented abroad.
The state that handles the apostille is usually connected to where the document was issued or notarized. For example, Arizona generally can’t apostille a California birth certificate just because its owner now lives in Arizona. That California document must follow California’s process.
This is one reason a wedding document package can quickly become complicated. One person may have records from several states, and each document may need a different route.
Will Your Marriage Documents Need Translation?
If the country where you’re getting married doesn’t accept documents in English, you may also need translations.
Some authorities accept a certified translation. Others require a sworn or officially authorized translator. They may want the translation completed after the apostille so both the original document and the apostille certificate can be translated together.
The order matters, so I don’t recommend ordering a translation simply because you know you’ll eventually need one. First, confirm:
What type of translation is required
Whether the document should be apostilled before translation
Whether the apostille certificate must also be translated
Whether the translation must be completed in the United States or in the destination country
